Rest for the Weary

Meditations on Matthew 11:28-30.

“Come to me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” First, Jesus identifies a type of people who, if they take a certain action, will receive an action from God. Who are these people; anyone who is weary and burdened! How many times in my life do I fit into this category? I probably fall into this category at least once a week. Life is tiring. It is easy to get worn down, or feel the burden, which comes from work, relationships, and the trials of life. So what is the action that these people need to take? Jesus says, “Come to me.” This action that Jesus requests looks like a number of things to me. Sometimes it means quieting my mind and heart and gazing on the attributes of God. Sometimes it means listening to him in his word and communicating to him my anxieties. Whatever it looks like, it must be a conscience action of moving towards God. “Come” entails getting up from where you, knowing where you want to go, and then moving to that place. If we do this, God promises us that He will give us rest! This is step one…
